"At 7am on Wednesday 1st July neighbours in a Moss Side street watched in horror as 1 year old Angela, 3 year old twins Bishoy and Anastasia, 7 year old Karin, 10 year old Nardin and their parents Mum, Samah and Dad, Hany Mansour were forcibly removed from their home by a large group of police and immigration officials. ...

"After having twice been let down by law firms who despite being paid up front failed to represent the family at vital hearings, their status was downgraded from asylum seeker to illegal immigrant. This has put them in line for immediate deportation. The family fear for their lives if deported and Mr Mansour would almost certainly be arrested and tortured on his return. ..."

Future American lawyers protest Attorney General's speech

Snip: "Alberto Gonzales spoke before law students at Georgetown today, justifying illegal, unauthorized surveilance of US citizens, but during the course of his speech the students in class did something pretty ballsy and brave. They got up from their seats and turned their backs to him. (...) additional students came into the room, wearing black cowls and carrying a simple banner, written on a sheet."

By Alister Doyle, Reuters Environment Correspondent

"Spending to protect the environment, from coral reefs to forests, can bring big returns to aid a worldwide assault on poverty, a U.N.-backed report said on Wednesday. The study, coinciding with a summit of world leaders in New York, even suggested that forests may be more valuable when left standing rather than being cleared for crops because trees can absorb the heat-trapping gases widely blamed for global warming.

"The environment...is not a luxury good, only affordable when all other problems have been solved," said Klaus Toepfer, head of the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) which was among 30 international groups behind the report.

The study estimated that annual investments of $60-$90 billion in the environment over 10-15 years were needed to reach a world goal of halving the proportion of humanity living on less than a dollar a day, currently more than a billion people. [...]"

NCPA Study Shows Living With Climate Change is Less Costly, More Beneficial

'Contact: Richard W. Walker of the National Center for Policy Analysis, 800-859-1154 ext. 13 or 214-507-4610 (cell) or richard.walker@ncpa.org

DALLAS, Sept. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Trying to stop global warming imposes huge costs and provides very few benefits, according to a study authored by a Bush Administration analyst and released today by the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA).

"Living with global warming costs a fraction of what it would take to stop it," said Indur Goklany, author of the NCPA study. "The costs of trying to prevent global warming far exceed any benefits of doing so for the foreseeable future." [...]'

My comments: [1] Credible analyses of the costs of preventing global climate change, which take into account wealth creation from sustainable technologies, find that it is very affordable. [2] Those who are least financially able to adapt to climate change tend to be those who are most likely to suffer the worst effects.

"The Coca-Cola company, in direct contravention of Indian laws, had resumed trial' operations at its Plachimada bottling facility in southern India on August 8, 2005. The bottling plant, one of Coca-Cola's largest, has been shut down since March 2004 because of community opposition."

The proposed UK ID cards bill is likely to get its third Reading in the House of Commons in October.

No2ID are building a fund to support the 11,000+ refuseniks who have already pledged to legally fight any imposed ID and database scheme. "A public pledge of UKP 1,000,000 even before they have started should give the Home Office something to think about."

If you have not already signed to refuse or resist the UK ID card scheme, you can pledge to contribute to the fighting fund at: http://www.pledgebank.com/resist . "Pass on or promote this message/link to as many sympathetic people and groups, mailing lists, bulletin boards and publications as you can without spamming".

Can anyone provide further information on this story:

Chicago -- August 2, 2005 -- TomFlocco.com -- U.S. federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's Chicago grand jury has issued perjury and obstruction of justice indictments to the following members of the Bush Administration: President George W. Bush, Vice-President Richard Cheney, Bush Chief of Staff Andrew Card, Cheney Chief of Staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, former Attorney General John Ashcroft, imprisoned New York Times reporter Judith Miller and former Senior Cheney advisor Mary Matalin.

And my second thought on reading this? His initials are RLC, not DLC - unless his full first name really is Dick?!

I believe that for security, we also need justice. UK residents can still pledge to refuse to register for an ID card at http://www.pledgebank.com/refuse - more than 10,00 people have already. However, if you cannot sign to Refuse, you can sign to Resist: http://www.pledgebank.com/resist - pledge to donate money, and actively support the refusers.

</TABLE Please only sign one, and ask other to sign one.

Can we understand terrorists, and understand errors made by security forces, and from these, understand the bigger picture?

Can we avoid calling individuals, 'failures', yet point to situations where people failed to fully rise to a challenge, and from this, learn how to succeed when next tested?

In the New York Times for 19 Jul 2005: Richard Paey is serving 25 years in prison in Florida. He was convicted of forging prescriptions for opitates. Mr Paey suffers from MS and chronic pain. The USA Pain Relief Network is supporting the Paey family in appealing against the conviction.

"Judge David D. Diskey heard Linda Paey’s pleas for mercy, but could not exercise judicial discretion because of a mandatory minimum sentancing. “This is the problem for the Florida state legislature and the governor,” Judge Diskey said."

After sharing condolences with those affected by the London bombings, Barbara Stocking (Director of Oxfam UK) writes:

"The G8 summit was ... over-shadowed ... but some real progress was still made. ... The commitments ... will help millions ... as a beginning.

Aid ... not enough. The G8 promised to increase aid to around US$50bn [~UKP2,850M] a year by 2010 ... the delay will keep 300 million people trapped in poverty.

Debt relief ... The G8 agreed to help only 18 countries. ... we're pressing for many more to receive the same support.

Trade justice The was little progress to make trade fair. ...

... the world's leaders do have another two opportunities in 2005 - a UN Summit in September and a World Trade Organisation meeting in December. ..."

What was the intelligence behind the Birmingham evacuation?

WTF?

The whole of the centre of Birmingham (UK) was evacuated last night. From news.bbc.co.uk: "Assistant Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, Stuart Hyde, said the measures were taken following information about a "substantial threat" to the area, but said the incident was probably not connected to the London bomb attacks."

"... Ahmed Sheikh, president of the Muslim Association of Britain, said he feared a backlash and added that the Muslim community would feel less safe. He warned that Muslims, especially women in headscarves, might fall prey to vigilante attacks."

We knew that attacks on London would come. We grieve with the bereaved.

And the battle is rejoined. Many will be shocked into re-considering life this morning: I deeply value freedom, justice and tolerance, how can I turn that into effective action?

I will speak out when I hear the bombing of London used as a pretext to attack freedom, justice or tolerance. I will continue to support No2ID (as I write, the Pledge has been signed by 9175 people), work for global justice (such as the Year of Microcredit 2005 and Make Poverty History (which includes Muslim organisations)) and ethical retailers.

I will work this autumn in a school with 50% Muslim pupils. I will have my second Urdu lesson on Sunday, from a devout Muslim woman who is a leader in the local Muslim community.

I will continue to train in aikido.

When I go out today, I will wear a shalwar qameez and dopatta.
