No. She said last weekend that she'd only read it a few months ago, and The Other Wind came out in 2001.
Yes, the similarities are obvious; no, she didn't derive that idea from him; he may have read Earthsea (or they may both have read the Epic of Gilgamesh) but I don't think the time works for him to have read The Other Wind before finishing His Dark Materials.
Ah, of course the 2002 date in my hardback copy is the first _UK publication. That changes the timeline - I was sure that Pullman couldn't have read "The Other Wind" in time (and I presume he would have mentioned it in the interviews which I have heard him give).
they may both have read the Epic of Gilgamesh
Good point.
In any case, I'm greatly moved by the shared symbolism of the release of the dead to rejoin the cycle of life.
Oh, he must have read 'Earthsea' - everyone's read 'Earthsea'! :)
You know, I still haven't read Pullman, but I did catch part of the R4 dramatisation (audio streaming is A Good Thing), and loved it. Of course, having not read it, I have no idea how close it was to the books, but they're on my list.
