Date: 2002-11-06 09:14 am (UTC)apt summary of what happened in Minnesota. The rest of the country looks similarly depressing. But I did like what Julie Sabo said about not giving up, and I hope to hear more from her.
It's democracy in action
Date: 2002-11-06 02:51 am (UTC)For years the US media have told the world that the US has the greatest system of government, free elections and democracy. This is the same media (and government) that somehow turned an attack on people and buildings and American foreign policy into an attack on that self same "democracy".
Now you get to reap the rewards. In free elections, the people of the US have picked the Republicans to run the US, and as the US has so much power worldwide, effectively to impose a republican charter on the rest of the world.
Of course, being good citizens and followers of the principles of democracy you're going to have to accept that the majority vote binds you to this policy ... (for extra credit, use the words "petard" and "hoist" in a sentence)
The rest of the world, being socialist and communist and otherwise "less democratic" doesn't have to accept that Republican charter. (extra credit: use the words "yah", "boo" and "sucks" in a carefully worded international reply).
Democracy is a system which gives the voting majority the right to run things, basically regardless of the wishes of everyone else. The UN has a "democratic" voting system to determine what is best for the world. The US is part of the UN. If the UN votes against a war in Iraq then the US (being a true and good citizen of the world/UN) will of course bow to the wishes of the majority.
Of course, if the US decides to push ahead regardless of a democratic vote, then I think the Republicans will have effectively declared "democracy" an outmoded and pointless construct, and you can then ignore the results of this mid-term election.
There, has that clarified things for you? <sad shake of head>

And just when I get asked to apply for a job in the US
