The deadline for submissions to the UK Government consultation on the future of the UK air industry is nearly here: Mon 30 June
Be warned - the official questionnaire is strongly biased toward supporting high levels of new airport building. AirportWatch provide a revised questionnaire biased toward demand management. Make sure you give your own opinion, not that of others...
Interestingly, the Government's own computer model appears to show that - if hidden subsidies at the level of UKP500 per year (for all UK residents, whether they fly or not) are removed, and the air industry starts to meet the full costs which it imposes on the UK economy - no UK airport expansion will be needed. Because of problems such as `the tourism deficit' (whereby the British spend more money abroad than foreign tourists do in the UK), it is far from clear that the air industry makes a net positive contribution to the UK economy.
You can read the Official Consultation documents, and extensive balancing debate from e.g. AirportWatch and make up your own mind. I'd be interested to know who else has replied to this consultation?
