Oh, joy. "Whilst the Tories are caught up in their own leadership turmoil ... the UK Labour Government plans to ... fast track identity cards"

I hate feeling like the Conservatives are the last best hope for the preservation of my civil liberties.

I mean yeah, in theory conservatives should be all about the liberty, don't-tread-on-me, government-off-your-back, and so on; but come on, it's the Tories...

Unfortunately, the authoritarian wing seems to be in the ascendency at the moment.

I can't see why everyone has such a downer on the Tories - OK - they're the Tory party, but the Labour Party are the Labour Party, and most people don't keep haroping back to the worst days of the Labour Party when talking about Labour, so *why* do it with the Tories??? Are people really saying they think that one side can change but the other side can't?

Mind you, it comes to something when the Tories are more left-wing libertarian than Labour!!

The Tories can change, but there's precious little evidence that they're actually doing so. If they were, they wouldn't have elected Duncan-Smith and then Howard as party leaders.

I'm not saying they can't, I'm saying they haven't.

So, you're saying that the Tories now are exactly the same as they were in the 70's? And exactly the same as they were under Thatcher? And exactly the same as they were under Major? etc. etc.

Sorry, but I've seen changes even if you haven't.

But they haven't acquired the commitment to civil liberties that a conservative movement ought to have, if 'conservative' is to be taken to mean 'libertarian', instead of 'plutocratic'.

It's happening here too - the REAL ID Act is being shoved through as a rider on funds for Iraq, even though security experts reckon a national ID card will make the nation less secure.

Yay! focus on the key issue affecting the working class why don't you Tony! Sighs! While the thought of Michael Howard as PM made my blood run cold, this lot in power are not really raising my temperature above the slightly chilly. Of course over here our version of the Tories are in power, they are just a lot more shambolic. Bless the PR system for pulling the teeth of strong government - at least a bit.
