Doesn't actually seem too bad an article. I am interested to note that none of the US news articles I've read so far point out that all of these allegations have been refuted in British courts, and that Galloway's come out on top each time.

You understand how to use 'refute' [FX: Swoon!]

... and, yeah.

What's so good about using "refute"? [FX: Confused expression]

I quite frequently hear politicians say something like, "I utterly refute that allegation", and I feel like shouting at the radio, "No, you've rejected it: now go ahead and refute it, you ninny!"

Obviously, I don't know the meaning of the word, 'reject', however :-) Here's what the OED has to say:

ad. L. refuture to repel, repress, rebut

1. trans. To refuse, reject (a thing or person). Obs. rare.
2. To prove (a person) to be in error, to confute.
3. To disprove, overthrow by argument, prove to be false
4. absol. To demonstrate error.
5. trans. Sometimes used erroneously to mean ‘deny, repudiate’.

The problem with definitions is that they keep shifting. Damn this living language! :::Shakes Fist:::

No, the problem is that the people using the words aren't aware of their correct definitions. Case in point: infer / imply.

But the definitions change because of common usage. So it's six of one and half a dozen of the other :)

That's misusage. Verily, forsooth.

I approve of language development (and tides).

I disapprove of destroying a one useful word by mistaking it for another useful word.

Sorry, I disagree :) It's how language evolves. Silly used to mean innocent, and now it means something distantly related but not the same by any stretch. The definition changed because people started using it differently. It doesn't stop me cringing when someone misuses a word, but I recognise that when large numbers of people do it over time, it shifts the definition.

Agh. Just turned on the tv and heard Louise Fletcher in ST:DS9 ask one of the other castmembers: "And what are you inferring?"

To Hell in a handbasket, I tell you.

Although I did get to interview Stan Lee in the mid-90s, I'd've loved to also meet Jack Kirby. It's difficult to come up with any artist with as great an influence upon comics (maybe Eisner, and both Herriman and Kurtzman were major figures, but..).
