... a working 'Walkman'-style portable audio tape player. I now have two broken ones... actually, if you can fix such things, please also get in touch :-)

I think I have one or more of these lurking around. I'll have a dig this afternoon as we are moving furniture around and emptying cupboards in an attempt to hide our building site. I have repaired them in the past although it depends a lot on the fault, when the mechanical side starts to get wobbly generally they turn into a series of running repairs, most common electronic faults are broken connections (easy) or work switches and controls. I'll let you know what I find. BTW an LJ freecycle isn't a bad idea, not for big stuff, best done locally, but maybe for odd stuff.
Hmm I found two but both seem to have dodgy tape players, lots of wobbly wonky noises making a total of three faulty walkmans, two at least have working radios although one only works on radio 4 - in Dundee. The message being dont superglue the tuning dial on your walkman you may move. I'm sure I made a resolution not to hoard rubbish a couple of years ago, probably lost it in the back fo a cupboard somewhere.
My need is for listening to language tapes on the move, so these probably won't help me.
I also have a note somewhere down a dark flight of stairs, behind a pile of rubbish and under a sign saying, "Beware of the Leopard" about not hoarding. It would work better with good resource reclaimation systems e.g. who responsibly deals with 'disposal' of broken walkmen?
According to "You and Yours" today the implementation of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive has been put off again. I'm not sure how many time this has been delayed as I was moving furniture at the time. Until then I tend to use freecycle where I can and hide thing sfrom myself where I can't.
We do indeed have a very cheap one lying around - it works fine but I wouldn't make any claims for its sound quality - it depends what you want it for. The even older but less crap SONY also still plays noise I think, but doesn't stay shut without the aid of rubber bands so is not really viable on the move. Do you want either? if so, e-mail me with your address (or send D round!) and I'll drop it in a Jiffy bag eventually (i.e. when I can face the pre-Christmas queue at the Post Office).
You are a star! I want it for listening to my 'Teach Yourself Urdu' language tapes whilst on the move generally. Even a rubber band sounds viable :-) I don't think D's going to have a chance to get down your way before the holidays, and it certainly doesn't have to get to me before the holidays in any case :-)
Please do let me know what you might fancy in return... more by email...
