It's Mater's 70th birthday next weekend. We're having a family gathering, with my brother, her brother and his wife, their children and grandchild (who will be 11 a few days later).

I wanted to find a film on DVD for us all to watch in the evening. It needs to be something basically up-beat - unfortunately, the new Star Trek film, which would have been ideal, isn't available on DVD yet.

Even my Uncle loved Mamma Mia! so we've got quite a bit of latitude, and Mum really loved Bride and Prejudice, so maybe something along those lines would work.

Suggestions, please!

Films I've seen recently that are upbeat and family-friendly:
* Slumdog Millionaire
* Madagascar / Madagascar 2 (never underestimate animated films!)

(I would recommend *not* Watchmen from the recent releases list as it's too adult for youngsters)

Sorry but slumdog millionaire is not suitable for an 11 year old. It's a certificate 15 movie. Have you seen stardust? Or the remake of hairspray? Sadly I'm struggling for anything new. Bolt is good fun - it's a cgi animation but got lots of adult in jokes - think The Incredibles with animals. I just asked my 12 year old(who has just started appreciating proper movies) for a recommendation and she suggested bedtime stories or inkheart.

Seen Bolt - the adults will be bored rigid.

Second vote for Stardust. Although I must say I was not bored rigid by Bolt and it is full of adult jokes. Has she seen The Incredibles though or The Princess Bride? sometimes it is easier to go with a classic.

Thirded for Stardust - it's a straight-up, old-fashioned fairytale, and it's absolutely adorable. Adults and kids can both enjoy it, and if you don't go "awwwwww" at least once during the film, you should check you still have a pulse.

From the classics, Life of Brian has something for everyone to giggle themselves stupid at, and it's good enough that anyone who's seen it already probably won't mind watching it again.
