End of a strange weekend
May. 22nd, 2005 08:22 pmThe worst of the side-effects that Mater has been experiencing have now subsided, and she's been able to eat and drink a little, and take her (reduced) medication. Unfortunately, things will get worse again overnight, as they always do, but hopefully, not so severe as last night.
I'm in a quandry about the stray cat. He was un-neutered, and had no chip, so someone was being irresponsible in letting him wander. If the original owners come forward, I would be quite upset. But with Mater ill, our old Flooger so set in his ways, and the outside possibility that Mater and I might be going on holiday next weekend, this is not a good time to be adopting a cat. I don't quite know how to explain the situation to the vet. I suppose the short version is that we will take the cat rather than see him languishing in a shelter, but that it's a bad time for us to be adopting a cat if someone else can take him.
Time for some comfort reading in bed now. G is flying back to Ireland tomorrow, but both D and G hope to be home on Thursday. The Flooger seems very happy at the moment...

Date: 2005-05-22 07:47 pm (UTC)As to the cat - isn't there a 28 day 'finding' period during whcih the current owners can come forward and claim him, so that you couldn't adopt until after that?
Glad the flooger is happy - maybe he can transfer some of that to M...

Date: 2005-05-22 07:50 pm (UTC)Strays never turn up at convenient times. Are the cats protection people any use in this scenario or would you have to give up custody first?
Is G coming to Cork again or elsewhere? He's welcome to give us a shout if he is here and we/one of us can take him out for a tobacco free Irish pub experience - big change since the last time he came out with us. Tell him he's not obliged to meet a toddler if he doesn't want - though I may be all wrong in my ideas and he loves tiny kids (hmm! on toast - yum).

Date: 2005-05-22 08:06 pm (UTC)I think there's a reasonable chance that Unknown Kitty will be adopted by someone from the vets or a friend ... I just don't want him ending up in an RSPCA shelter :-(
Toast is probably a good idea :-) Unfortunately, he's going to Dundalk!

Date: 2005-05-23 07:02 am (UTC)How is your Mum today? Are you able to sleep yourself? Well, I suppose you will tell us on your LJ update. You are much better at updating than I am.
You did a good thing with Unknown Kitty. Those kinds of wounds can be very serious if not treated. One of our outdoor cats got hooked up on some barbed wire once so, if that was the cause, I know how nasty the lacerations can be.
When are you supposed to be going on holiday? I hope Mater's illness/relapse won't put the kibosh on it as it all seemed to look very promising just a few days ago. Good luck!

Date: 2005-05-23 09:19 am (UTC)Mater is very coherent and alert today, but quite physically weak after the strain of yesterday. We're booked to see the doctor in an hour. She's just told me that she desperately wants to be able to go on holiday - we're due to leave on Saturday morning - which is the first time she's said that. We're going with N's extended family, so there will be about a dozen people who can help in various ways - I've told Mater that if it is at all possible, we will find a way to go!

Date: 2005-05-22 10:10 pm (UTC)I hope the vet can find a good home for StrayCat ... I do understand your desire to have him safe and well, but adding a new pet at this point would be a major source of stress -- and that, you really don't need ;-)
Good luck, on all fronts.
