I would call 3000+ calories excessive for most non-manual workers. So I wonder whether the calorie counts given are actually human food chain available totals divided by population total, rather than real individual intakes.

I suspect that this is actual intake, since this is easier to measure than some potentially available total. It would tie in the the currently claimed obesity rates too...
