Carbon offsets

My reading is that most are snake oil. Once we've optimised our greenhouse gas emissions, I reckon we're best to support community-led projects which are intrinsically worthwhile. Community tree planting and protection in the tropics is a particular good bet, climate-wise.
TREE AID's programme in Africa has a single aim:
'Enable poor families, especially women, to unlock the potential of trees and forests to meet basic needs and generate income'

They seem reliable. Anyone know more about them? Oxfam also support such work. I'm interested to learn of other good projects.
