We've been blanketted with another inch or more of snow overnight - and already, our garden looks like the outdoor citizens have held a rave. Probably the pair of juvenile cats which have moved in nearby!

So my ideas for what to do for the garden need to bend and weave to adapt to the conditions. I wonder if I still might be able to transplant one of my rhubarb crowns?

First review meeting with Mater's rehab team tomorrow afternoon, and first meeting with her new community physiotherapist tomorrow (at last!), so I'm going to need the evening yoga session which is planned.

I've just reached the season finale for the first season of Veronica Mars, so I spent all night worrying about Duncan, Veronica, Keith, Wallace, Weevil and Logan ... could have been the glass of port, and/or a touch of viral relapsing from the permanent coldy-fluy thing I've had all winter too ...

Meanwhile, anyone got any advice on how to clear a month or three in my schedule to properly process all that's been happening between Mater and myself ... and how to set up appropriate contingency plans too ...

A nice day

I've had a reasonably restful yet productive day ... G & I went for a walk in the cold fog, and then we all ate the lunch which D had cooked, and then I did some pruning in the back garden, and then we all ate fantastic vegan curry from the award winning local Gujarati vegetarian restaurant ... and now I think I will curl up with the kittens and doze.

I haven't been writing much about Mater ... because she's having good days, and bad days, and we're doing what we can, and we don't know how things are developing yet ... her other child, J, will visit her tomorrow.

I just had a very useful chat with Mater's new re-hab case worker. She seems to be talking a lot of sense. She's going to visit Mater again today, and chase up Social Services for us, and chase up Mater's care co-ordinator too.

I have left a message for Mater's GP, who tried to get her re-admitted to hospital on Friday, to say that we believe Mater will not agree to that for now, that we understand the seriousness of the situation, but that she does have a new re-hab case worker addressing the situation, and leaving contact details.

So I feel a little more hopeful ...

Also, there are two warm, relaxed kitties on the bed :-))))

We have had a stressful weekend.

Mater is still having anxiety attacks, scared that an ambulance will suddenly turn up again and she'll be forced to go back to hospital. As far as I can tell, she is physically stronger and more dextrous than she was even in the weeks before she broke her wrist back in October. Also, in the final week she was at the rehab hospital, her condition was deteriorating - as far as I could tell, because she was becoming mentally 'institutionalised'. Moreover, the rehab hospital said they could do no more for her. Also, she is very settled in her desire to be in her own flat. So the GP's assessment that Mater should be back in the rehab hospital seems at the very least, inconsistent.

I had panic attacks in my nightmares last night. One vivid 'hallucination' that the Flooger had been kittynapped. The other, that I was on holiday with various members of my extend family who have never even been on cordial or speaking terms with one another, and that no one was co-operating to get us off on time. Even when I was awake, I had high anxiety levels, and only got back to sleep with some concerted deep-breathing exercises.

So you can probably guess how I'm feeling right now, with a heap of phone-calls I'm supposed to be making to chase things up for Mater ...

I just goofed off for an hour with a bowl of homemade spicy blackberry and apple crumble, and an episode of Babylon 5 which D & I are watching again in order (we're nearly at the end of Season 4).

Mater is currently safe at home.

I found a message on my phone at 06:30 (when I got up to feed the cats) that had been left at 00:30 (why didn't the phone ring?) from the rehab hospital, asking me to ring when I had a chance (but no name, and no return number).

Turns out Mater has fallen twice this week, and been checked out as OK by the paramedics. But they reported to the GP, and added that she 'seemed confused'. Sounds like panic attacks leading to wobbly legs to me.

But the GP faxed the hospital, asking them to urgently re-admit Mater - without talking to her, or to me.

Mater says that when the ambulance turned up she was amazed - and she turned them away.

The 00:30 phone call was the hospital finally finding my number, ringing to try to locate Mater, as she didn't answer her phone. Well, you have to ring twice or three times in succession, as it can take her that long to get from the bedroom (and she won't take the handset to bed).

So I feel like chewed string, with something eating my stomach. I am effin' incredulous at how much harder everything is being made by the lack of an effective communications strategy amongst Mater's care teams. Patient-centred care, my unmentionables! SNAFU, most definitely.

Anyhow, I'm about to go and visit Mater ....

... on my way to work, we have a staff plus Trustees discussion meeting all day (including rather good catered food, at least).

Firstly, worrying because it's a rumour, and no one has talked to us directly about it.

Alledgedly, because Mater has been in hospital, she comes off the list of her social worker.

Further alledged, the hospital was supposed to assign her to a new social worker when she was discharged, but have not yet done so.

If true, this means she has no social worker - which has all kinds of problematic implications.

Anyone know how this is supposed to work?

As far as I know, Mater has completed her first 24 hours at home now.

I spoke to her around 09:30, and she was ... doing OK all things considered ... but she'd fallen out of bed in the night, and pulled the chord for assistance to get back into bed, so was checked out by the emergency doctor and given the all-clear ...

Mater arrived home at about 15:30. I visited her with a token gift, as she'd said she was really wanting a curry after all the hospital food: a locally made vegetable samosa, which she happily ate.

So ... a new stage. Mater is relieved and happy to be home, but also very anxious and scared she might fall over and break her wrist again :-S

We are trying to help her to build herself a thorough rehabilitation programme, and she has increased carer support for now as well.

(In other news, the Wong! and Boof! are doing well, and I'm going to keel over and snoo in "Wong!'s warm cave" a.k.a under my duvet, now ...)

Many thanks for all the kind and encouraging words, as ever.

Self definitely stronger today, ENT symptoms milder too. Got some work done on my portfolio, too - and a little de-cluttering, yay!

The Ward Sister is really pleased with Mater's progress since she was admitted to rehab on Sat 12 Dec 2009. Shame she spent 4 weeks rotting on the general ward, but that's all behind us. The Activities Assistant is back this week, so that should increase the Occupational Therapy options. The consultant does their ward rounds tomorrow morning, so there'll be a proper 'case conference' with all the hospital staff involved. Another patient called 'Reeny (broken collarbone) has 'adopted' Mater and is doing a great job of encouraging her to do her physiotherapy and try to keep calm!

Flooger is back home but a whole bank of blood tests sent off, which may reveal a need to hospitalize on Wednesday. Meanwhile, little bits of good news from the Flooger's purr-spective:- the antibiotic pills are stopped for now, but the delicious probiotic googe (that costs 15 quid for 10g) is still on the menu, and he's allowed to have all his favourite foods just as long as he eats something, and a painless injection of painkillers to help him feel more comfortable overnight ... and he's not in hospital for now!

Right, time to feed the food apes and unwind for bed!

Poor little Flooger has been unwell for a week now, off his food, obviously uncomfortable, not drinking anywhere near as much, minimal insulin dose required.

The vet suspects pancreatitis: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+1329&aid=334

If so, there's no easy cure, especially with underlying diabetes. However, there's a good chance that a hospital stay - rehydration, nutrition support, medication for the discomfort - can sort him out.

V-E-T at 18:40, your good wishes always welcome.

Off to visit Mater this afternoon, and talk to her V-E-T about about her medication, hopefully.

It's a really bright, cold day here today - and we have two new part-grown feline neighbours, one Felix-style black-and-white, the other tabby with white feet, clearly friends, who have been cavorting in the garden all morning. I'm feeling a good deal less grotty than I have for weeks. I'm sat at my desk, starting to get going again on my Permaculture Diploma, which I'm due to submit in the summer and defend in September.

I just spoke to her, and she's so much more coherent than she was!

The plaster cast is off her broken wrist, as it has healed. She has been given some physiotherapy, and the rehab hospital physio staff are helping her with that. They have given her a strength-building 'stress ball' which - mirabile dictu - she is using!

Now we just need a gap in the weather so that my brother can drive up safely tomorrow from the Basingstoke area ... and Christmas will be ON!

In other news, I have been 'promoted' from the top of Scale 2 to the bottom of Scale 3 at work - some small extra duties, and an extra UKP 18.70 per month before tax, plus the possibility of further 'promotions' ;-)
purpletigron: In profile: Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts from Dr Who (Default)
Mater is settling into the ward in the specialist hospital, and even if I'm too snotty to visit tomorrow I should be able to speak to her on the phone around 11 am.

YAY! I just felt a weight lift from my heart, I swear it!
purpletigron: In profile: Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts from Dr Who (Default)
As of about 3pm, Mater was on the way to the specialist hospital.

Can't visit her as I'm full of viruses, but hope to speak to her on the phone this evening.

She apparently received the two grazeFruit boxes too. Not sure if she's been helped to open them though ...

ugh

stuck at home in bed with cold ... but home is warm, Wong! is snuggled up to me, G is making lunch, and I just have to wait until the hospital transport has moved Mater anyhow. So, not so bad...
purpletigron: In profile: Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts from Dr Who (Default)
Mater has been accepted for an initial 4 weeks of rehabilitation at the specialist hospital, and should be moving there tomorrow. This will include psychiatric, physiotherapy and occupational therapy there, plus her wrist should come out of plaster back at the original Fracture clinic soon too. Also, the specialist rehab people are hopefully coming on Monday.

Also, they've started reducing some of her medications, and so far she seems more alert and LESS anxious ... which would be FULL OF WIN! if it continues.

Think I'm coming down with a cold, but that's OK in trade for these good steps :-)
purpletigron: In profile: Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts from Dr Who (Default)
I celebrated the middle of the week this week with a lovely gentle half-hour yoga and relaxation class - this is a habit I could happily form :-)

Dinner is done and dusted, which suits my metabolism (by 8pm, I'm too tired to be hungry, and by 9pm, it's bed-time) ... just a little light Flooger-molestation (in the form of his blood tests and insulin injections) left on my To-Do list tonight. (Obviously, lots of things like 'stepping on the cats' permanently on my To-Don't list).

Hopefully, Mater's Citizen Advocate was able to visit and talk with her today - and hopefully, Graze will successfully deliver a selection of fresh and dried fruits to Mater's bed tomorrow (and she'll enjoy the benefits of eating them).

I'm also writing a few Christmas cards ...
purpletigron: In profile: Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts from Dr Who (Default)
Some constructive conversations today with people involved in Mater's care - her new junior doctor seems particularly insightful, which is a good step.

Also, Mater seemed genuinely gladdened to see me, and enjoyed the black grapes I took.

Can anyone tell me - is that company which delivers 'healthy snacks' to your desk still active, what are they called if so, and bonus question: anyone know if they would delivery to a hospital bed?

Now, V-E-T for the Boof!er who has a sore tummy.
purpletigron: In profile: Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts from Dr Who (Default)
It was lovely to see some of you at Wit's End yesterday ... sorry to have to rush off, but I was fast asleep by 10:30, and up for half an hour by now :-)

Meanwhile, the NHS has closed all its doors to Mater, it seems - nothing to offer her because she is past retirement age, and not responding to their somewhat fire-and-forget treatments. Edit: It seems to me that this represents illegal discrimination on the bases of age and mental health - they can't help her physically because she's over 65, so they don't have any teams allocated with appropriate training on physical rehabilitation of mentally ill people.

So, time to look for new doors to open elsewhere ...

Meanwhile, Hi Ho! off to freely offer infomation on the benefits of plant-based living for the festive season, for people in institutions such as hospitals, for our own health ... as well as for currently farmed animals, world farmers and people currently living in poverty.

Better

I've updated my previous post to reflect the fact that the immediate crisis is over, and the general hospital doctor now seems to be properly progressing Mater's discharge to the right specialist hospital again.

No idea how long that will take :-S

Phew!

SECOND EDIT: Finally spoke to Mater's named junior doctor, who seemed to properly take into account all our concerns, and will log in her notes that I have exercised my right as carer to object to Mater being sent home, and will look at her going to the specialist hospital as originally recommended by Mater's own team 4 weeks ago. Many thanks for all your support!

EDIT: I have spoken to the locum consultant - the person that the hospital said had to review Mater's condition and decide if she should be discharged to a specialist bed - and he says that that decision is not his responsibility, he has no objection to her going to the specialist bed, but it's the hospital's decision to make. Trying to ring the hospital now ...

ARGH! None of Mater's doctors are even available on the phone, and a locum (newbie temp) is threatening to discharge her into physical danger!
