Finally Googled it, as I should have done before asking the question. But I wonder how many of the novels which might result will be anywhere nesr publishable?
I do know several people who have used NaNoWriMo to create a rough first draft that, after more work, was publishable.
But that's not the point of the "marathon". It's largely for people who have always wanted to write, but can't "allow" themselves the time without an outside influence. It's an opportunity to say, "I give myself this block of time to do this", as well as a way to do it with encouragement from a whole host of other people who are doing it as well.
Realise also that most successful published authors--and by "successful" I mean multiply-published writers who make a comfortable living at the job--write each day at least as much as the NaNoWriMo challenge requires each day to make the goal.
