This has been on the cards for a while but still disappointing. I am pretty sure I do not like the new BBC guy.

Bah! I wish people (and corporations, public and private) weren't so quick to p*ss away their cultural assets. We don't need another news service, and I'd suggest that the international community of World Service listeners don't particularly need a 24 hour news service either.

Morons!

The World Service, and being able to listen to John Peel, Just A Minute, I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, etc., kept me sane when I was in China. I'm pretty sure a 24-hour news service wouldn't.

I'm with you. BBC7 and R4 online are great for us expats too. I've only listened to Westway a couple of times, but the documentaries and music programmes and plays on the World Service are every bit as valuable as the news.

Argh!

But I though they'd they tried it for while--and it was awful. So they put back a lot, tho' not all, of the things we'd lost.

Of course, the Guardian story itself is inaccurate: Westway is available in this country albeit only on BBC7. I try and miss it on both channels.

It's a crap decision tho'. The World Service has some wonderful programmes, tho' I actually value its news coverage too as th perspective is significantly different from Radio 4.

Isn't the World Service available as a stand-alone digital channel on DAB radios? I'm sure I've seen it on the menu on mine.

Well probably, since it's definitely available on cable. So when Radios 4, 7 and 3 let me down, I listen to the World Service during the day.

Oh, we so need another 24-hour rolling news service!

("And now live to our correspondent on the spot, who has the latest on what's happened since we last spoke to him ten minutes ago." "Well, Peter absolutely nothing's happened here or is expected to happen here for the next hour or so, so it's back to you in the studio to frantically fill the airtime instead.")

You can contact the World Service here and let them know what an appalling idea this is.
