I'm reading the 'Falco' series for the first time, as I didn't get into 'The Silver Pigs' on my first attempt. Now I'm hooked (and not just on Helena Justina :-) and I've just finished 'The Accusers'. So the pointer to Steven Saylor is timely indeed.

Meanwhile, lots of exciting plans for today, the least of which is to visit Sainzburgz to buy more of their own-brand Organic cat food in Poncey Trays (TM) ... the Boof!er is addicted...

Interesting, it took me a couple of goes to get into The Silver Pigs, too. Helena Justina... what a woman! ;)

Anton Lesser made a great Marcus Didius Falco in Silver Pigs on Radio 4 a while ago - loved it. They rebroadcast it on BBC7... last month?

You like PC Doherty's mediaeval mysteries, ancient Egyptian whodunnits, and his Alexander the Great novels? I'm a fan. My Dad really likes the Egyptian stories.

I think The Silver Pigs might be in the BBC online archives somewhere!

I've not tried many other authors - just the Cadfael and Sister Fidelma series. Unfortunately, my local branch library holds none of the Steven Saylor books, so I will have to get them from the central library.

Thanks for the tips!

The adaptations are available on CD from BBC worldwide (and I've seen them for donwload from the oneword website) and quite well done too.

i recently read a collection of short history-mystery stories dedicated to the memory of Ellis Peters. All I can say is that there is a great abundance of crap out there and be deeply suspicious of anything set in Ancient Egypt. Kim Newman had a story in there about Jekyll and Hyde though that was pretty damn good - showed up the rest of the collection rather although they were not by any means all equally crap.

Silver Pigs didn't do it for me, either. I should continue on in the series anyhow?

I haven't read the series as a whole at all - more just magpied the books that came my way. The most recent one I have read is "One Virgin Too many" which was fun but I enjoyed Steven Saylor's short story "in The House of the Vestals" (?) more still. i am keen to find the next Falco after that though as his continuing adventures in the property market are very entertaining and keep getting buggered up by the damned mystery investigations.
