Permaculture Skills Sharing
Feb. 21st, 2009 09:10 pmSpent a lovely day in North Smoke with D and 7 others - in glorious weather - learn a little more about permaculture in practice.
We particularly looked at sheet mulching and green manures.
Sheet mulching - layering material to suppress weeds and improve the soil - can be used to create a new growing bed without digging (see e.g. http://www.chelseagreen.com/content/index.php?p=1054).
Green manures protect soil from weathering damage, and improve fertility and structure (see e.g.http://www.veganorganic.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=48&Itemid=99999999).
The Vegan-Organic Network (VON) has good free information sheets on some of these topics - see http://www.veganorganic.net/ (click on Information Sheets on the left-hand menu about half-way down).
